LA VIDA DE LUIS
Luis Carlos Lopez is a homosexual 23 years old young man from Cuba.
Born and raised in Santiago de Cuba, he learned music by himself and became the first tenor of the prestigious Orfeon Choir and founder of ConPaz, a vocal quintet.
Luis' life is a life lived in the constant search for a tough and fragile balance between the need for steadiness and the hardships of being by his own without substantial economic possibilities in today's Cuba.
His only certainties are his musical talent, his boyfriend’s love and the strength deriving from his own roots, coming from the people with whom he grew up and who accept him for what he is.
I met Luis in July 2019. I followed him and shared his life for several days, with the aim of relating, through his eyes, what it is like to live in Cuba today, what has changed and which difficulties or hopes might a homosexual person encounter along the way.
I focused my attention on the everyday life, on his relationship with the people close to him and on aspects related to his professional career as a singer and musician.
I tried to highlight, focusing on his gestures and gazes, the state of LGBT rights in the island as well as the challenges to be dealt with.
